An alleged trespasser was stopped at former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Malibu, California, property Friday night, prompting a response from Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and increased patrols around the residence.
Harris and her husband, former Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, were not home when the incident occurred, according to Harris spokesperson Eduardo Negrón.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies responded to the property at approximately 10:30 p.m. after Harris’ security detail reported a suspicious person.
When deputies arrived, they contacted the individual and instructed the person to leave. Authorities said the individual complied and departed voluntarily without further incident. No arrest was reported.
Negrón said security personnel intervened after an individual entered Harris and Emhoff’s property without authorization.
“Last night, security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” Negrón said in a statement reported by the Los Angeles Times. He added that Harris and Emhoff were grateful to security and law enforcement personnel for their quick response.
Authorities have not publicly identified the individual or provided information about a possible motive.
Reports differ slightly over how far the individual made it onto the property. Harris’ spokesperson said the person was stopped before reaching the residence, while the Los Angeles Times reported that a Malibu/Lost Hills sheriff’s station official said a woman had made it to the front door.
The Sheriff’s Department took a trespassing report following the encounter and said deputies from the local station would increase patrols around the property as a precaution.
The incident also draws renewed attention to security arrangements surrounding Harris after she left office as vice president.
Former vice presidents generally receive federal protection for six months after leaving office. Former President Joe Biden extended Harris’ Secret Service protection beyond that traditional period before leaving the White House.
President Donald Trump later revoked the extension in August 2025. The extended protection otherwise would have continued into 2026.
Changes to Harris’ protection previously prompted questions about which local and state agencies would assist with her security in California.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the California Highway Patrol continues to assist Harris’ security detail, although CHP officers were not at the Malibu property when Friday night’s incident occurred, according to CHP Sgt. Christian Stevens.
The Los Angeles Police Department had also previously been involved in security arrangements for Harris but ended that role amid criticism over the use of city police resources to protect a former federal official, according to the Times.
Friday’s incident ended without violence or injuries, and officials have not announced criminal charges against the person involved.
The Sheriff’s Department’s decision to step up patrols indicates authorities are taking additional precautions following the unauthorized entry.
Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee in the 2024 election, served as vice president from January 2021 until January 2025. Before becoming vice president, she represented California in the U.S. Senate and previously served as California attorney general and San Francisco district attorney.
Harris and Emhoff have maintained a presence in California following her departure from the White House.
As of Sunday, authorities had not disclosed additional information about why the individual entered the Malibu property or whether investigators believe Harris or Emhoff had been specifically targeted. The available law enforcement accounts indicate the encounter ended peacefully after security personnel and sheriff’s deputies intervened.
